A tree is a woody terrestrial plant comprising a trunk on which branched branches are inserted carrying the foliage, the whole of which forms the crown, also called the crown. Trees are perennial plants that live for several years, decades, or even centuries, and in rare cases, several millennia. It is estimated that there are between 60,000 and 100,000 tree species on the planet. Almost 40% of them are threatened with disappearance. Vegetation formations dominated by trees growing next to each other are forests, but trees can also grow more or less isolated outside forests.
They play a major role in the terrestrial ecological functioning because of their capacity to store carbon (their annual dry matter production corresponds to two-thirds of the world production of terrestrial plants), to take an active part in the cycle of water, and in general to constitute the complex ecosystems that are forests, sources and refuges of biodiversity. They also constitute for human societies a considerable resource of materials (mainly wood), foodstuffs (in particular fruits), and multiple services. They occupy an important practical, and symbolic place in almost all cultures of the world.
There is no universal definition of the tree, as this concept covers a great variety of formations and species with diverse and localized arrangements, so much so that botanists, arborists, and foresters continue to debate this subject. With a view to constituting standards allowing comparisons of forest resources on a global scale, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) proposes a definition, essentially based on height. The FAO considers that a tree is a plant species capable, under good growing conditions 8, of growing at least 5 m in height (for developing countries) or 7 m (for developed countries) as an adult, which distinguishes it from the shrub whose height at maturity is between 0.5 and 5 or 7 m, and which does not have a defined crown. FAO thus includes in trees non-woody species (bamboo, palm trees) having the above criteria.
